By Anis Shakur

Umar Sharif made his mark as a comedian in the beginning of the 1980s. His is an adventurous and hilarious tale that is bound to fuel your imagination! One of his first public appearances was at the Taj Mahal Hotel, Karachi. He earned encomiums from the public in the Taj Mahal's stage comedy show.

Quickly there after, young Umar Sharif's identity began to emerge. He worked his expressive face to take the viewers on flights of laughter. Additionally, Umar Sharif played a pivotal role to revive Karachi's cultural activities.

Better yet, he worked whole-heartedly to transform the Karachi's Rex cinema into an impressive auditorium. This auditorium served to showcase Umar Sharif's stage plays and dramas. In fact, Umar Sharif has a knack for finding the best in an actor.

His mastery of the brilliant gimmicks always brightens the show and carries the day. Two quick examples are the stage shows 'Bakra qistoan per' and 'Buddha ghar per hai.' First and foremost, Umar Sharif's distinction hinges on his being the superfluous host to numerous Pakistani television talk shows and stage programs round the globe.

Moreover, in the past twenty-five years, 1980 - 2005, Umar Sharif has served his nation resplendently as a comedian, innovator, movie director, producer, writer, actor and hosted stage and television programs. He has a good singing voice as well.

There is no question about his understanding of the possibilities of the medium. Along the way, Umar Sharif achieved legendary status by influencing and shaping the Pakistani consciousness. His love of acting took him irresistibly to the movies.

Umar Sharif debuted as an actor with director Mohammad Javed Fazil's 1986 movie, 'Hisaab.' The four movies below of director Javed Fazil, in which Umar Sharif acted, offered credible dialogues to the cine-goers:
'Kundan', 'Aag he Aag', 'Aawargi', 'Dushmano kay dushman.'

It is hard to believe Umar Sharif created enough impression through his artistry to keep us interested up until today. Over and above, after all these years, Umar Sharif's performances still retain their enchanting freshness.
Umar Sharif did his role with affecting sincerity in director Nazar-ul-Islam's film 'Barood ki chaoon.'

Likewise, he held long-lasting roles in director Altaf Husain's five movies below:
'Jhutay Raees', 'Chupay Rustam', 'Laad Sahab', 'Khotay Sikkay', and 'Rani beti Raj karay gee.'

In reality, Umar Sharif have had such a rich and interesting life, he retained an atmosphere of long ago. Further, he conveys the almost desperate eagerness to please that is part of numerous performers makeup. Umar Sharif's character is most definitely one to watch. Ultimately, so are director Hasnain's two movies:
'Aik ko das numbari', 'Nehla Dehla.'

His innumerable admirers are always eager to learn more about him. But for Umar Sharif, it is a challenge he meets with ferocious gusto. In times due course, Umer Sharif mastered his performances in a way to express a profound, intense joy, and the effect was electrifying in the two movies directed by Zahoor Gilani, 'Duniya meri jaib mein', 'Danda peer and in director Sangeeta's films 'Behrupia', and 'Sahab bibi aur tawaif', as well.

With his perpetually boyish grin, Umar Sharif made the comedy shows his own, and by extension, ours. Umar Sharif's fans have nothing but faith and love for his talents from start to finish. This comedian has every reason to feel buoyant.
Umar Sharif outshined in director Daud Butt's film, 'Hathkari', director Faisal Aijaz's film 'Mehelay Daar', director Pervez Kaleem's film 'Buth Shikan' and director Iqbal Akhtar's film 'Muskurahat.'

More important still, through his previous experiences, Umar Sharif added flavor of the day. His past accomplishments speaks volumes nonetheless. The three movies below are simultaneously praiseworthy and presents Umar Sharif's comedy classics:
The film 'Mastana Mahi', directed by Imtiaz Qureshi, the film 'Actor' directed by Akram Khan and the film 'Phool', directed by Aslam Daar.

In 1992, his adorers had been waiting impatiently to watch his directional debut movie, 'Mr. 420'. Every minute passed was a minute too long. Eventually the suspense was over as 'Mr. 420' was released at Capri cinema, Karachi. Umar Sharif played triple roles opposite actresses Ruby, Madiha Shah and Shakila Qureshi. Apart from being an actor, Umar Sharif was also the writer, director and producer of 'Mr. 420', which won eight Nigar Awards in all.

The next year, 1993, Umar Sharif produced his second film 'Mr. Charlie,' which could not achieve as much popularity as 'Mr. 420.' In 'Mr. Charlie', Umar Sharif worked opposite Shakila Qureshi. Umar Sharif directed the film 'Chand Babu' and played the title role as well. However, his film 'Miss Fitna' which he also directed could not succeed at the box office.

At the zenith of his career, Umar Sharif married renowned television and movie artist, Shakila Qureshi. Bad luck, the matrimonial relationship could not last long and it resulted in their separation.

One of the many services of Umar Sharif is that he transformed Lahore's movie theater, 'Shama' into a comedy theater. He worked as its administrator, as well. After 'Al-Hamra', Syed Afzal's 'Tamaseel' and Umar Sharif's Lahore Theater has been an incessant source of entertainment for the stage and theater buffs.
Umar Sharif won national acclaim and earned the Nigar Award for best actor- director- writer in the film 'Mr. 420' in 1992.

Umar Sharif earned the Nigar Award for best actor in the film 'Mr. Charlie' in 1993.
Umar Sharif made enormous strides to reach to a place where he is today. To his myriad of fans all over the world, Umar Sharif is an embodiment of fun, frolic and laughter. Romance is always present in his celluloid persona.

But to the amazement of every admirer, Umar Sharif shared some serious thoughts with the interviewer the other day, which was quite unusual. Soberness was evident in his eyes, as he talked.

I looked at him for a while and thought that it may be hard to see romance in such mundane evidence. But it was there-and so, it seems to me, was hope.
